2009 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon

RubiconThe Rubicon trim was first made available in 2003 during the end of the TJ generation.  The Rubicon was named after the famous Rubicon trail in the Sierra Nevada Mountains near South Lake Tahoe.  It was originally introduced only as a standard SWB option but for model yar 2005 was made available as an Unlimited.  For the JK generation the Rubicon was carried through as the “off-road ready” package and was available in both standard and Unlimited versions.

Staples of the Rubicon package are larger beefier axles, tires and off-road accessories such as rock rails (sliders).  The Rubicon package is also known for lower gearing and a 4:1 transfer case for superior 4X4 capability.

The 2009 JK Rubicon featured electric lockers and an electric releasing sway bar disconnect system; both of which had built in buttons integrated into the stock dash.  A Rock-trac four-wheel drive with a 4:1 transfer case was also standard.

The 2009 Rubicon also featured heavy duty Dana 44 front and rear axles including a 32-spline rear with an 8.8 inch ring gear.  Both axles were geared down to 4:10 to support larger 32″ BFG Mud Terrains which came stock.

Why Buy a Rubicon Package?

The Rubicon trim is the best out of the box package for off-road capability available for the Wrangler line.  While things such as tires and rock rails can easily be replaced, important 4X4 features such as axles, gearing and transfer case ratios are not as easily changed.  For those looking for a very capable out of the box trail rig, the Rubicon is a great choice.

This however comes at the added cost, as Rubicon package Wrangler’s are often significantly more expensive than X and Sahara models.  Its a matter of weighing personal needs vs cost.  For those who anticipate a moderate amount of trail riding and do not want to hassle with major modifications, the Rubicon package is probably the best choice.
